The Cleveland Cavaliers in the post-season
April 23rd 2010 15:00
The post-season has begun. They beat the Bulls in the first two games. Last night, they blew it against them making it now a 2-1 Cavaliers lead in the post-season. The big focus was the lack of defense and the lack of free throw shooting. This has been a problem from the beginning of the season. We all knew Shaq wasn't one that could be counted on for free throws.
Those who want Mike Brown fired, be careful what you wish for, you just might get it. The next coach will probably be some mediocre coach that will fail here and they may never see anything close to this again. Remember, they could wind up with a coach like Randy Wittman, who proved he couldn't be a head coach with losing seasons with Cleveland and later Minnesota. Remember the path the Indians after Mike Hargrove got fired? How many World Series appearances have they made since? The most anyway claims is within one game and that's just not acceptable. I'll stand by this until I'm proven wrong and they win.
Stop with this run and gun style. It will never win an NBA Title. You can have a good game plan but have the players have to execute it and obviously, that didn't happen at all. They decided somewhere along the line that defense wasn't going to work so try to be the Phoenix Suns and go with the Run and Gun approach.
I wouldn't worry too much about the series as they should win seeing that the Bulls are a .500 team and also the number 8 seed in the conference. Cleveland should win this one but the next round won't be easy whether it's Boston or Miami.
A disturbing trend has been the odd year factor with getting knocked out of the 2nd round. The 1st year was a 2nd round defeat to the Pistons in 7 games. The 3rd was a 2nd round defeat to the Celtics in 7 games. The only difference is that they have home court.
They have to keep winning the first game of a playoff series. When they do that, it's pretty much a foregone conclusion they will win the series. When they lose the first game, it's going to be a lot harder because the 1st game can set the tempo.
As far as beating the Bulls, they have to simply play better defense, score as much as possible, and most importantly, hit the free throws. You can't practice all day but it's not going to matter until the game starts.
I'm not sure they're going to win it all so I'll go round by round and say the key is winning the first game. Bad things have happened to Cleveland and it's time for a change to win a major championship.
