mud sport

It was great to see some sport in the wet on the weekend, especially in sydney.
Although with the brilliant and state of art drainage on grounds these days it hardly seems as if it had been raining except for some slipping and sliding.
I rememeber many years ago when we had a big downfall sometimes the footy would be postponed or cancelled but with the corporate dollar these days the ground would have to be struck by lightning to be called off.
Many years ago I longed for those games where the players would run out of the dressing sheds all clean and angelic like, only to be smashed in the first tackle and copping a face full of mud, now wer'e talking.
By halftime the teams would be unrecognisable to the spectators let alone the referee, who was the cleanest player on the paddock but that would get the biggest cheer if he fell over.
After halftime the players would return in fresh jerseys but the rest of them still philthy, I found this quite amusing, I guess it saved on one the mums having to do to many loads of washing if it was her turn.
Then the reserves would run onto the field, all clean but they would be given the biggest, hardest tackles of the match because boys will be boys especially when it comes to mud.
I remember as a kid looking forward to slipping and sliding whilst playing weekend sport c crossing my fingers and hoping there was no radio bulletin from the local council saying all games have been cancelled, nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo....
One game I played in the wet as a ten year old was a funny one as we were about ten minutes into the game and I got a shout from the coach saying he knew I had done nothing because I was to clean, pretty obvious, didn't need any statistics just look at my crisp white shorts.
Needless to say I tackled my heart out for the rest of game.
