Cleveland Sports Assessment - Cleveland Sports Assessment

The Cleveland Cavaliers are 38-11 and have run a gauntlet of facing opponents with many back-to-back games early in the season. They have survived it all despite losing for a period of time Jamario Moon, and recently lost both Mo Williams and Delonte West. For the Cavs to keep winning despite some of the losses is a sign that perhaps maybe they are more dangerous than anyone could have imagined or predicted.

Rumors have been around surrounding of the thought of trading Z to another team. Well, on one hand, you can see the thought because of last season when really nobody wanted Wally and wasn't exactly jumping at the thought of taking him. On the other hand, they are doing well at this point in time and don't seem to be slowing down and can be a case of being able to defeat who they couldn't last year being the Magic and Lakers.

If Z is indeed traded, there has to be hope that he will be bought out and would return back to Cleveland to finish his career. Given what he has gone through, it would be nice to let him have a ring before he retires. I do believe he will retire at the end of the year.

At this point, I must admit I don't know what to think on this one. All I know is that if the right deal comes into place, then pull the trigger and go for it. Don't go for a deal that you are not certain of at all. Let's not forget the Cavs probably do have plenty of those foreign players that are overseas developing skills and could be brought over assuming they have a Center or two. Andy is more effective as a forward, though he can play center but mostly he seems to fit as a forward.

Where does LeBron stand on this? If he thinks a trade is necessary, he'll probably push for it. If he thinks it will be necessary. Right now, I'm thinking only if it is the right deal and it makes the most logical sense. The team is doing well now but will need to continue that string of momentum in the post-season and become even more dangerous. I'm undecided but won't be opposed as long as the deal makes sense.

There is just one game left and it looks like the Cleveland Browns are going to finish strong.

After going 1-11, the Browns have gone 3-0 since that game with Pittsburgh. The question is going to be about whether or not this will save Eric Mangini's job. It remains to be seen. If they can beat Jacksonville, it would be a case of deciding to fire him or not.

With President Holmgren, it is going to be his call to do what is necessary for the Browns to be successful. He will go on to hire a GM and if need be a new head coach. There are two sides of the arguement about whether Mangini should stay or go. On one hand, you really don't want to get another coaching change and the candidates list may not be that attractive of an option. The other hand would be whether they can agree upon what it would take to build a winner.

It is good because now we are seeing what Jerome Harrison may be capable of doing. He has done a tremendous job being the lead running back and should be re-signed by the Browns to be the man. Add in the potential with Jennings and maybe Davis if he can stay healthy could become a three-man power running game.

The confidence factor does come into play. It doesn't matter who you play when it comes to that. When you get victories, it helps boost your confidence and belief you can make a difference with the organization. Without it, you really go into game with a defeated attitude and it is unacceptable.

They do not need to have the #1 pick. It is pathetic. Who would really want that? Besides paying for someone who could turn out to be a bust, it's like saying you like to beat up every minute. That doesn't sound fun and is like torture. Then again, some people like pain. It's good because maybe then they can look at what they need to get instead of having to get everything and that includes the kitchen sink.

It seems that the team is content and willing to stand pat. All the talk about needing to remove Lee and Martinez to contend in 2010 really looks like a farce. The manager of the team is Manny Acta and Mark Shapiro is still the GM for whatever reason. The Indians as a whole really are in a division that they should be able to win considering the competition. They claim that every 5 years is as good as it gets. As a fan, I say it is unacceptable. They must contend consistently.

If you want the fans back, give them a reason to believe in the team. Give them a reason to go to the ballpark and say that they can feel like their team has a chance of getting the job done. Otherwise, you risk it by saying that you basically do not care one way or the other. When that is done, that doesn't work as well with the Cleveland people.

This is a city that wants a championship in the worst possible way. It could mean anything, even including become super heavyweight spenders. It is unlikely but the point being they want to win and much like myself, that's what I want to see. It does not matter how it is done when it comes to getting players, but they should know they cannot win on the cheap.

Standing pat pretty much is not the way to go and just doesn't feel like there is going to be some effort to make it better. This is a chance to really go out and perform. Take the division by force and do not let other teams act intimidating. Is there really someone in the AL Central that is intimidating? Personally, I don't think there is.

I know the off-season is early. I really hope for their sake, they do whatever it takes to contend. Waiting on a rebuild is just not an option but that's just my opinion.

Will Randy Lerner ever get it right?

December 18th 2009 16:20
The main theme that has to be looked upon will be Randy Lerner. Now, without seeing him on camera, it is really hard to get an idea on what exactly is his goal and does he care about winning. Some people may claim that he does and that is possible. Others do not really know for sure. He also does own the Soccer team but has hired people to run it pretty much so that he doesn't have to really do it himself.

It is unclear who he is going to hire but he has to get the right football mind to run the team. They need a President, a GM, and possibly a new head coach. Without really knowing who is available, it does make it hard to speculate. He has to be really good with this and whoever it is must have some experience in building a franchise up. There has to be experience required in this sense because going to new people to do it may not necessarily be the right move for this team

Assessment of the Cavs

December 11th 2009 19:25
Normally, I rotate but for this it's time to take a look at them and see what can be looked upon. They are 15-7 and currently leading the division. They've lost games they shouldn't have. Then again, who doesn't? If anyone suggest the Celtics, Magic, or Lakers, then you'd be wrong. They lose games they're not supposed to as well. This one is going to be focused on the Cavaliers.

Mike Brown does take heat no matter what happens. They could go all the way to the Finals and win it and you'd have some say he should be fired or it was in spite of him. It takes a combination of coaching and players working together. You can see they work together. It isn't about having losing seasons consistently, it's about doing what is necessary. To fire Mike Brown would be crazy. It probably and this is just my opinion be counter-productive. Unless there's some super coach out there that would come to Cleveland and can do a much better job and win multiple titles, he may be the one. What is wrong with that

A couple years back the Cavs were in the finals for the first time in franchise history. I wrote up a piece about it and it is time to reflect and look back on it. Just click here. I've had a chance to think about it.

It was disappointing that they didn't even win one game or the series. They have the opportunity to go back to the finals and win it this time. When I wrote this, I knew they had to face off with the Spurs, whom I believe may have peaked at that moment

How the Tribe can reclaim its fan base

December 8th 2009 18:33
Once upon a time the Tribe could sell out games but now that does not seem to be the case. During the 1990s spell, not only did they get a new stadium at the time, but also had a product people believed in. It was a sense of change for the fans that they had players they could root for and not have to be worry for sometime on getting rid of them but then it all changed. The Dolans would buy the team and it would open up a perception whether they deserve it or not of being called cheap.

The main thought on that is because they cannot get behind the team because as soon as the players get really good, they are traded away for prospects. If those prospects develop well, they are traded for more prospects. Granted, this isn't the only team but the focus is going to be on the Indians

The Cleveland Browns really need to get everything in order big time. In fact, I've been thinking that for years. This version has been around since 1999 and only two times have they actually had a winning season. It just feels that all that is done is that these players care only about the paycheck and not have any sense of dignity and not want to be laughed at.

There is a reason that the team has been an embarrassment to the city and to the fans. They don't care and don't seem to want to try. That is what it looks like but then again, that's just an opinion

Thoughts on the Cleveland Cavaliers

December 2nd 2009 15:15
As they prepare for the Suns, there seems to be a bit of a controversy. It is all about whether or not Z should have played in the game against the Mavericks. It isn't even about the win, it's about Z breaking the record and Mike Brown made the decision not to play him. Granted, it was shocking but something like this should have been handled before the game. Had that been the case, it would have been a non-issue. What I'd like to know is why wasn't it addressed during practice and get everything in order?

For anyone to call for Mike Brown to be fired, I have to say why? It would be one thing if the team had not been that good at all. This is his 5th season, and each year so far has seen the team go to the playoffs. It's not because or in spite of him, there is such a thing as respect between players and coaches. I believe that has played a role. If you fired him, who is going to come in and be this "real" coach that some people are crying about? Before anyone says Pat Riley, I don't see him coming back to coaching period. Mike Brown isn't perfect but the job that has been done with the Cavs has been pretty good, all that is left is getting an NBA Title. I wouldn't fire him but I will say this, be careful what you wish for, you just might get it
